Written to provide appropriate piano instruction for 4-, 5-, and 6-year-olds, this series is a comprehensive approach to musical learning that develops singing and listening skills simultaneously with an appreciation for a variety of musical styles. The materials in the course combine to create an exciting and imaginative atmosphere both in the lesson and at home. Book 1 gives children a carefully paced orientation to the keyboard: low and high sounds, up and down the keyboard, and an equally careful presentation of groups of two and three black keys, left and right hands, and finger numbers. White key letter names are gradually introduced with letter names in note-heads. Children generally play one repeated note or two note melodies in one hand only per piece and learn the first three notes of middle C position for each hand by the end of the book. The Starter Set includes a vinyl bag printed with the name of the course, a music activity board (magnetic and dry erase), and two stuffed animals, Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse. The Deluxe Starter Set includes everything in the Starter Set plus Music Lesson Book 1, Music Discovery Book 1, Music Workbook 1, Lesson and Discovery CD 1, and Flash Cards for Book 1.

Book 2 continues with pieces dedicated to one hand only. The first half of the book provides pre-reading pieces with letter names in note heads, gradually introducing the child to all the notes in middle C position. The second half of Book 2 gradually shows the child those notes on either the treble or bass staves.

The first half of Book 3 has the child playing 4-8 measure tunes on the grand staff, one note at a time, first right hand and then left hand alone. C Major position is slowly introduced. The second half of this level continues with melodies alternating between the hands and gradually providing pieces where the melody is in one hand with one-note harmony in the other.

Book 4 slowly and carefully phases the student to playing in G Major position and introduces staccato, legato, flats, sharps, and harmonic seconds, thirds, fourths and fifths. At the end of the level, children are ready to progress to Alfred's Prep Course for the Young Beginner, Level C, or enter any series at the elementary level.
