Alexander Siloti
CARL FISCHER LLC
If all that could be said about Alexander Siloti (1863-1945) was that he was a prize student of Liszt and teacher of Rachmaninoff, that would be enough to stake a claim for him in music history. But in fact, Siloti was, perhaps, as gifted a pianist as Russia has ever produced. Siloti's work as arranger, transcriber, and editor seemed to have been inspired by his years with Liszt. Each of Siloti's transcriptions is wholly pianistic. With astounding ingenuity Siloti revoices chords, redistributes pedal figures, recasts melodic lines, provides exact fingerings which pianists ignore at their peril, offers unusual double-fingerings and "third-hand" mid-keyboard thumb lines so as to "re-imagine" counter melodies, and in all of this honors the grand nineteenth-century tradition of broad gesture and heightened effect. This volume includes transcriptions of the works of J. S. Bach; Gluck; Mozart; Chopin; Liszt; Saint-Saens; Tchaikovsky; Rimsky-Korsakov; Liadov; Johann Strauss, Jr.; Scriabin and Rachmaninoff.
Air on the G String; Brandenburg Concerto, Nos. 2-6; Prelude from Cello Suite No. 1; Bourree from Cello Suite No. 3; Gavottes I and II from Cello Suite No. 6; English Suite No. 2 in A Minor; French Suite No. 2 in C Minor; Sarabande from French Suite No. 3; Gavotte from French Suite No. 5; Aria; Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring; Jesus, Priceless Treasure; Keyboard Concerto No. 5 in F Minor, Mvt. 2; Little Preludes, Nos. 2, 3, 7, 8; Quia Respexit from Magnificat; Badinerie and Menuet from Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B Minor; Gavottes I and II from Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major; Partita No. 1 in Bb Major; Praeludium and Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor from Partita No. 3 in E Major; Rest Well, Beloved from The Passion According to St. John; Here Bide We Still with Tears and Weeping; Sheep May Safely Graze; Sleepers, Awake; Siciliano from Sonata No. 2 for Harpsichord and Flute; Two-Part Inventions, Nos. 1, 2, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15 and Prelude and Fugue, Nos. 1, 2, 5, 6, 11, 16, 21 from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I.
